Title: SS
Author: Harumoto SHOUHEI
Publisher: Shogakukan
(Big Comic Superior title)

In his younger days as a university student, Daibutsu Osaragi was a frequent competitor in Japanese rallies, winning lots of events and competitions with the local motorsports club. But since Daibutsu is now married and has a family to support, his racing days are over... or are they?

The desire to race rekindles in him, and Daibutsu finds himself going out for a few quick night-time runs at the local mountain roads and the Shutokou in a Mitsubishi Starion 4WD Rally. Soon the other drivers in the area run into the mysterious car; and one of those drivers is one of the local aces, Kabuki.

Kabuki discovers that the Starion driver is nicknamed "Jackie" by the other younger drivers - after the Starion-driving Jackie Chan in Cannonball Run 2 - and is known for having an unpredictable style of racing. After a quick highway battle at the Shutokou with the Starion, Kabuki sees Daibutsu in action himself and is very much amazed. He tries to find out the Starion driver's identity, and fails - but he has his suspicions.

Daibutsu finds himself being pursued by the other drivers - the younger ones, eager to challenge the mysterious Jackie, and the older drivers - some of them even old rivals.

SS features not only touge racing, but also highway hi-spec street racing and rallying. The cars featured in this manga series are a varied mix from sports cars like the Porsche Carrera RS, today's rallying greats like the Lancer Evolution and the Impreza, and also the old Group B cars like Lancia's Delta S4. The artwork is beautifully done, with lots of detail and interesting character designs. Highly recommended.
